Brief & Context

Bungalow extension to gain a first floor bedroom suite with study, bathroom and star-gazing lounge, taking in coastal views and the night sky.

TJA’s Response

The new first floor plan maximises coastal views and optimises storage in the dark part of plan. The ground floor plan untangles front-of-house from back-of house. This involves a new side entrance and boot room to manage mess, so that the entrance hall can be more formal and welcoming. Both look into an inner courtyard that was previously obscured by the former entrance hall's guest loo and coat cupboard. Further, the new stair location and reorganised circulation both do away with dark corridors, and the landscape design arranges pathways and planting to improve privacy for ground floor bedrooms. Zinc cladding, charred larch timber and large format windows are arranged to emphasis horizontality, layering and relief, making the overall form appear dynamic rather than weighty.
