Brief & Context
We were asked to help secure statutory consents to convert half a barn into a dedicated home office. The barn forms one side of a forecourt to the main house, which is a grade II Listed rectory.
TJA’s Response
A new stone wall is formed across part of the barn frontage, featuring a timber door and window to match joinery seen in less grand outbuildings around the main house. The stonework is coursed limestone rubble with lime mortar and a sand slurry finish, to match the main house. Inside, the arrangement places a bathroom and entrance lobby at the front, so a large double-height space can be arranged along the back with a large window and French doors to a south-west-facing garden. A mezzanine level provides further floor area above the bathroom and lobby, with rooflights allowing daylight to fall across characterful finishes such as timber boards, timber slatted panelling and cork flooring. The new building envelope is well-insulated and benefits from some solar-gain and thermal mass due to the placement of windows and thick walls.
