Brief & Context

While at Wright & Wright Architects, Tommy was project architect for this project. Working with the local parish group, the brief was to adapt a Grade I Listed church to support more of its local community, not just for worship, but also for performances, workshops, meetings, accessibility and energy efficiency.

TJA’s Response

Working with the relevant heritage consultation groups, as well as a local stone expert, we explored possible locations for a new toilet and servery. Heritage impact and accessibility were the key concerns. Counterintuitively, it was decided that the best way of addressing these two concerns was to locate the new facilities around the front entrance. This meant they would be peripheral to the nave and chancel, welcoming and accessible to visitors and in a location that would require alteration to less historically significant fabric. The brief was to incorporate catering facilities, a toilet and a vestry, as well as remodelling external steps and sloped pathways to aid accessibility.
